HEREISH
2011
oil airbrush on canvas
92 x 71 inches
Though he moves freely between fanciful and mundane imagery, and even between abstraction and representation, the same goofy exuberance permeates all of Michael Williams work. The naïve style that shows up in some of his work shows the influence of a path laid out by artists like Jean Dubuffet and Philip Guston. In Hereish, cartoon faces and shapes appear beneath a thin white wash, while a rainbow-stripe outline above the wash hints at another cartoon silhouette. Daubs and stains are scattered around the canvas, and overall the piece has an energy and playfulness that taps into the most inherent properties of painting itself – image-making, application of paint and storytelling. Williams received his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis, and he has been in solo and group shows at galleries worldwide.
