Los Angeles-based Lesley Vance’s abstractions contain a multitude of forms and phenomena whose identity remains uncertain. The artist’s earlier work featured large-scale landscapes filled with plants and parts of figures, while her recent paintings are a more concentrated, less representational distillations of these motifs. Vance has explained, “Usually what I paint is in a precarious position wherever it’s resting and the painting depicts a momentary coming together. The arrangement is temporary…” which suggest that for all their references, Vance’s compositions take on a visual and metaphorical life of their own. Leslie Vance received degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and California Institute of the Arts, Valencia. She has held residencies at the Flag Art Foundation and at Giverny, France, and her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art (the 2010 Biennial), Aspen Art Museum, and The Contemporary Arts Museum, St. Louis.
