In this stunning and complex photograph, Eileen Quinlan tackles some of the assumptions, frustrations and skepticism inherent in the creation of a photograph in our image-saturated society. Quinlan uses medium to large format negatives and does not digitally manipulate her photos, allowing imperfections (such as dust particles and rough edges) to show, in part to tell the story of the photograph’s creation. The subject of the photograph is, primarily, angled reflections in stacked mirrors. And though the result is certainly beautiful, Quinlan’s creation of a flat image (the final photo) of flat images (the mirror reflections) registers as a serious, conceptual pursuit. Quinlan recently had a solo exhibition at The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions at the UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Kunsthalle Bern; and P.S. 1.MOMA New York. Quinlan has work in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.
