Anthony Pearson

UNTITLED (TABLET)
2011
bronze relief with cobalt patina
15 x 3 3/4 x 1 1/4 inches

Much of LA-artist Anthony Pearson’s work plays with the implications of translating an idea or object into a different material, and he typically works with sculpture, drawing and photography simultaneously. In Untitled (Tablet), soft, sensual geometric forms bend and hang off the wall, yielding to gravity. In part, the compelling presence of the work results from its creation in malleable clay before being cast in cool, rigid bronze. Pearson’s work also exists in the space between the 2-D and 3-D worlds - since the piece is wall-bound, but fully in space. The work almost reads like four brushstrokes hanging off the wall, drooping from the weight of their own paint. Pearson’s work is in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. His work has been shown at numerous museums , including the Aspen Art Museum, California Museum of Photography, and Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.
