APPLEHEAD SEATED
2009
glazed stoneware
20 1/2 x 19 1/4 x 12 5/8 inches
Fairytale, folklore and surreal imagery shows up consistently in the recent sculptural works of Czech artist Klara Kristalova. In Applehead Seated, a delicate figure has developed an apple for a head, and her arms and legs have become branches. One wonders if the figure was turned into a tree as punishment in some twisted fairy tale, or if there is a more poetic reason - perhaps she is a mythical creature or wood nymph connected with nature. Kristalova’s rough and naïve sculpting technique adds to the fragile, dreamlike quality of the piece. Kristalova lives and works in Norrtälje, Sweden, and she has had solo shows throughout Europe and North America, including an exhibition at SITE Santa Fe, USA in 2009. Recent group shows include House in my Head, Kunsthallen Brandts, Brands (2010); the Third Fellbach Small Sculpture Triennial (2010); and Luc Tuymans: A Vision of Central Europe (various locations, Bruges, 2010).
