Houston artist Mark Flood has become known for his lace paintings – delightfully colorful and deceptively delicate works which are as intriguing for their process as they are in their finished state. Flood’s work incorporates the element of chance as he tatters the lace, applies and arranges it on the multi-colored wet canvas, and peels it away, resulting in the intricacy and texture which characterize these works. Here, the placement of the lace at the edge creates either an elegant frame or a jagged hole for the intense red hue that takes up the center of the canvas. Flood’s work is represented in collections at the Dallas Museum of Art; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; the Menil Collection, Houston; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others.
