household paint and plywood
96 x 48 inches
Dual oscillating patterns redolent of energy or sound waves cross over one another in this subtly vibrating painting by New York-based artist, Michael DeLucia. His interest in modernist ideas of abstraction receives a distinctly aggressive update in the way the plywood has been carefully, yet forcefully, gouged. With its unpretentious lack of preciosity and finish, the work invites further viewing, revealing the artist’s ability to wring complexity out of seemingly everyday elements. Michael DeLucia received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001 and his MFA from the Royal College of Art in London in 2004. A solo exhibition of his work was organized by the Detroit Museum of Contemporary Art, in addition to solo exhibitions in galleries in New York, Chicago, Paris, Brussels and Turin. His work is represented in the Saatchi Gallery, London, and the Rubell Family Collection in Miami.
