Frank Benson |
UNTITLED (SCREEN) In this mysterious photograph by New York-based Frank Benson, a hazy cityscape appears through a screen. The industrial scene is distorted by the filtering of the image, and the work sets up a compelling relationship between the worlds on either side of the divider. Many metaphors – psychological and conceptual - come to mind, among them a play between interior and exterior states of mind; the relationship between the photographer and the world observed through the lens; and the camera’s inherent ability to distort, filter and remove information as an image is produced. Benson participated in the world-touring Uncertain States of America - American Art in the 3rd Millennium curated by Daniel Birnbaum, Gunnar B. Kvaran and Hans Ulrich Obrist which was exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery in 2007. His work has been the subject of a solo exhibition at the Miami Art Museum, and he has been in group exhibitions at the Bienal pavillion, São Paulo, Brazil; GAM-Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporarea, Turin; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo.
